Auger Comparison, Use, And Attachment Information

Auger Types

Types of Augers

Standard Augers

Standard augers are great for most jobs. Typically, Standard augers are used for projects involving softer soils; however, with various tips and blades, standard augers can be used in tougher soils, from clay to compact soils and even frozen ground. Standard Snap-On augers are available in lengths of 36” (30” hole depth) and 42” (36” hole depth) with extensions available.

Heavy-Duty Augers

Heavy-duty augers are recommended for rocky soil but can also be used on hardpan or frozen soils. These augers will operate better at slower RPM speeds and should be used at 20:1 or 13:1 gear ratio. Heavy-duty augers are equipped with tooth and side cutting blades and take standard bolt-on points or carbide tip points. Also available in lengths of 36” (30” hole depth) and 42” (36” hole depth) with extensions available.

Pengo-Style Augers

Pengo augers are specifically for rocky or abrasive soils and have a unique rubber lock feature for replaceable cutting blades. Pengo augers only take Pengo-style points, blades, and carbide blades. Point and blade size must correspond with diameter size, and Pengo-style augers require rubber locks for blades. Standard snap-on extensions are available.

Hex Augers and D-Series Augers

Smaller augers between 1” and 3” in diameter are too small to be designed with a snap-on connector. Thus, hex augers come with a snap-on hex adaptor, connecting the auger to the drill with the snap button connection. Hex augers take unique hex points and hex carbide blades with an adaptor. These are used mainly for soil sampling. D-Series augers connect to some earth drills to provide an alternative to snap-on augers. D-Series takes standard points, carbide blades, and heavy-duty teeth. Each must correspond to its diameter size.

*Standard, Heavy-Duty, and Pengo-Style augers are available as snap-on augers. Hex and D-Series augers require adaptors to connect to the drill and to points and blades.
